On the maker’s hand, the second look, and a home that is never finished.
Hadas Teuscher spent a decade as Director of Communications at an architecture and interior design firm in Chicago. Sourcing objects for its projects, she found a market where too many pieces looked the same. Trove Object Gallery was her response: one-of-a-kind, handcrafted objects by makers from Turkey to Iceland, from Mexico to Portugal.
I. The Second Look
Choosing well does not begin with the eye. It begins with a pause.
“It begins with a feeling that makes me pause and look twice. I often find myself thinking about the person who made it and where it came from. I look for pieces that show the maker’s hand, where material, craftsmanship and imperfection all come into play. Often I don’t want the prettiest piece, because that feels almost expected. Perfect pieces rarely change the feeling of a space, create conversation, or become part of the story of the people who live among them.”
II. Collecting by Feeling
A room can be completed. A life cannot.
“Handcrafted objects are what make a space. When almost everything is at our fingertips, a one-of-a-kind object is unexpected, and it makes a place feel personal. My parents are big art collectors. They never buy something because it would work in a certain room, or because the artist is popular. They collect what makes them feel something. A handmade vessel or an unusual texture says more about a person than a room of perfectly coordinated pieces.”
