Travertine Column · Italian School · Italy, c. 1950s–1970s
Architecture does not begin with walls. It begins with the column.
This monumental travertine column — solid, massive and unhurried — carries the formal memory of the classical tradition into the domestic interior with absolute conviction. Carved from rustic solid travertine, the shaft rises 120 cm from a square plinth base through a toric moulding, tapering slightly as it ascends in the manner of the ancient Roman column. No surface has been polished into submission. The stone retains its natural porosity, its fossil inclusions, its tonal variation between warm ivory and sand — a geological record that no manufactured material can replicate.
At Ø 22 cm, the shaft is substantial without being monumental — scaled for the interior rather than the piazza, yet carrying the same formal authority. The square plinth base — 30 × 30 cm — anchors the piece with the same quiet gravitas that defines the whole. A piece that functions equally as a display pedestal, a sculptural object, or an architectural accent that reorganises any room it enters.
The rustic travertine surface — unpolished, tactile, warm — connects this column directly to the Italian tradition of working stone in its most expressive natural state. Neither restoration nor ornament: simply stone, form, and time.
These are antique pieces and are sold as such. Although VV does its best to highlight major flaws, minor imperfections should be expected reflecting the age and previous use of the piece.
