These are antique pieces and are sold as such. Although VV does its best to highlight major flaws, minor imperfections should be expected reflecting the age and previous use of the piece.
Modder Natural is a hand-coiled stoneware sculpture by Dutch ceramic artist Françoise Jeffrey, executed in 2022 as a unique piece and delivered directly from her Amsterdam studio.
The work is built through a coiling technique — clay rings stacked and shaped by hand into a totemic vertical silhouette that balances rounded organic forms on a cylindrical base. The surfaces are left unglazed, allowing the raw stoneware to retain the full honesty of the material — tactile, direct, and without concealment. Subtle asymmetries and surface variations are not incidental but structural — the record of a process carried out by hand, in time, with intention.
At the base, a delicate application of gold references the Japanese practice of Kintsugi — where what is imperfect or fractured is not hidden but marked with something precious. In Jeffrey's work, the gesture carries its own philosophical dimension: that what is natural — unfinished, irregular, honest — is not a lack of refinement but its truest expression.
Part of Jeffrey's Modder series, a sustained body of work that explores clay as a medium of memory, vulnerability, and renewal.
