Hubert, Untitled (CMLXXVII), 1979
A sheet of handmade paper that carries its own history. On the front, a field of white fibres rises in relief from a pale, silvery-grey ground, like frost on stone or the trace of something written and then erased. The deckled edges have warmed with time to a soft amber.
The reverse is as eloquent as the front. Washed in warm ochre around a paler central field, it is signed "Hubert" several times in black crayon and dated 7 IX 1979. Three red seals, two arrows marked "UP" to guide its hanging, and lines of text in a script that seems invented complete the surface, together with the Roman numeral CMLXXVII. The sheet reads less like a finished image than a document: a record of making, marking and time.
Floated on linen in a natural wood box frame with matte museum glass, the work can be seen in its full depth, with the texture of the paper and its irregular edges left free.
The work will be exhibited in What Remains, an exhibition curated by Valeria Viollaz at The mep, Lucerne, from 7 November to 2 December 2026.
