Italian Empire Crystal Basket Chandelier · Taller Pilutti · Italy, c. 1950s–1960s
Light, when it passes through crystal, does not simply illuminate. It performs.
This Italian Empire crystal basket chandelier, produced by the Pilutti workshop in Italy, belongs to a tradition of artisanal lighting that reached its highest expression in the postwar decades — when Italian craftsmen, working in small regional workshops, produced fixtures of extraordinary material refinement without the anonymity of industrial manufacture. Every element here is the product of a hand, not a machine.
The dark patinated bronze structure forms the architectural armature of the piece: a foliage-crowned corona at the top, from which cascading chains of hand-strung crystal beads descend in the characteristic basket form of the Empire style. The lower ring — articulated with festooned arches and lance-shaped crystal pendants — anchors the composition with the same formal rigour that defines the whole. Eight candle arms extend outward at the perimeter, each fitted with a white wax candle cover, while a ninth light is oriented downward at the centre for focused table illumination.
The crystal — dense, clear, and cut with precision — catches and refracts light in constant motion, transforming any room into a field of shifting luminosity. Compatible with both incandescent and LED bulbs.
A rare and decorative piece from a small Italian workshop. The dark bronze patina and quality of the crystal place it firmly in the Italian postwar tradition — a period when craftsmanship and ornament were not in contradiction.
