Japanese Wood-Fired Yunomi with Signed Tomobako
Pair of Japanese Meoto Yunomi with Signed Tomobako
A pair of Japanese yunomi made in the tradition of meoto, the "husband and wife" cups given as a wish for a shared life. One slightly taller, one slightly smaller, they are meant to be used side by side, alike in spirit yet each with its own presence.
Thrown on the wheel, both cups keep the gentle undulations of the potter's fingers along their walls. A soft grey-green glaze, close in tone to celadon, covers the surface and breaks into a fine crackle, catching the light in thin veins that deepen with use and time.
Their beauty is quiet and unhurried, rooted in the wabi-sabi sensibility that finds grace in the irregular and the imperfect. Robust and comfortable in the hand, they are made for daily ritual: a cup of sencha or genmaicha at the start of the day, or a small measure of sake shared at the end of it.
The cups rest in their original wooden tomobako, inscribed in ink and sealed in red on the lid. Complete in their box, they make a meaningful gift for a wedding or anniversary, or a discreet addition to a collection of Japanese ceramics.
Origin: Japan
Period: Second half of the 20th century
